How to Get Rid of Ants

Image
Ants invade homes for one reason: food. Whether you left crumbs on the kitchen table or forgot to take the trash out, where there's food, there's ants. Ants aren't all bad. They help to clean up dead animals and naturally create topsoil as they burrow into the ground. But they can also pose a danger to you and your home. Ant bites aren't only annoying, they can trigger an allergic reaction in some people. A typical ant bite can cause pain and discomfort, but bites from a fire ant can lead to difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, nausea and dizziness. While fire ants pack a big sting, other ants can do a different type of damage. Carpenter ants, similar to termites, can cause damage to your home's walls, decks, doorframes and other wooden materials. These ants create nests in wooden areas that are moist and starting to decay, and cause damage by tunneling through the wood. But if your home has become infested with ants, don't worry. Yorkshire cricket club punished over Azeem Rafiq racism scandal

Image
Yorkshire County Cricket Club were slapped with a huge 48-point deduction in the English County Championship on Friday after admitting four charges related to the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal. Pakistan-born bowler Rafiq, 32, went public with allegations of racism and bullying in September 2020, related to his two spells at the English county. The independent Cricket Discipline Commission (CDC) also fined the club 400,000 pounds ($514,000), 300,000 of which is suspended for two years. The points penalty sends Yorkshire to the bottom of Division Two of the County Championship. The Yorkshire board issued a statement accepting the sanctions. “The CDC and ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) have today acknowledged the vast amount of work done by YCCC to overcome the cultural issues that existed within the club, which allowed racist and discriminatory behaviour to go unchallenged,” it said. “We are accountable for these issues, and we accepted four amended charges as part of a contin

Pakistan thrash Sri Lanka by an innings and 222 runs

Abdullah Shafique’s first-innings double century, followed by a sensational seven-wicket haul by Noman Ali steered Pakistan to thump Sri Lanka in the second Test by an innings and 222 runs. The Green Caps declared their first innings at 575-6, leading Sri Lanka by 410 runs. Nauman was unplayable throughout as the opponent batters kept falling after regular intervals. Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan (37*) and Agha Salman (132*) resumed their innings at 563-5 on the fourth day. Rizwan scored quick runs to complete his half-century before Babar Azam called for declaration. It was Rizwan's eighth fifty in Test cricket. He replaced Sarfaraz Ahme

How to take better breaks at work

Image
For many of us, being productive means spending more time working. It seems intuitive that the more time we spend on job tasks, the more we can get done. And not surprisingly, the popular literature is rife with advice on how to maximize work time. For example, the “daily routines of CEOs” often include things like waking up at 4 am, working on the weekend, and even being “strategic about how often you go to the bathroom.” To tackle an ever-increasing workload, many workers choose to grind through, skip lunch, and stay after hours. But the cost of being always-on (and doing it well!) is high. More than half of employees (59%) report feeling burnout according to a recent survey. Engagement has taken the opposite turn and is declining among the U.S. workers. Alarmingly, both high burnout and low engagement rates are associated with hindered performance. What can we do to address our declining well-being while maintaining performance? Pausing work rather than pushing through might he

Pakistan-India World Cup match likely to be rescheduled

Image
The match between Pakistan and India at the upcoming 50-over World Cup scheduled for October 15 in Ahmedabad is likely to be rescheduled due to the date coinciding with the beginning of the Navratri festival, Indian media reported on Wednesday. The Navratri festival, which is held in honour of Hindu Goddess Durga, is celebrated over a period of nine days. “We have been told by the security agencies that a high-profile game like India vs Pakistan, for which thousands of travelling fans are expected to reach Ahmedabad, should be avoided since they will be stretched because of Navratri,” a top official from India’s cricket board, who did not wish to be identified, told media. “We are mulling the options that we have and a decision will be taken soon,” the official said. Indian media also reported that Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah had called a meeting in New Delhi on July 27 (tomorrow) of all the associations hosting the World Cup matches. “I feel it

The development came during Misbah's meeting with Ashraf on Monday. Second Test: Abrar, Naseem shine as Pakistan bowl out Sri Lanka for 166

Image
Abrar Ahmed and Naseem Shah rattled Sri Lanka before Tea on day one as they bowled out for 166 in the first innings of the second Test in Colombo on Monday. The bowling duo went berserk on Sri Lankan batters who couldn't find any clue to settle down at the crease. Dhanajaya de Silva tried hard to replicate his first Test's heroics here but he could only score 57 before falling to Abrar with Saud Shakeel taking a well-judged catch. Abdullah Shafique once again took a blinder at short leg off Abrar to remove unlucky Sadeera Samarawickrama who got out in the same way for the third time in a row this series. Ramesh Mendis resisted a bit with his 27 runs but Sri Lanka fell apart just before Tea. Abrar bagged four wickets while Naseem managed three. Shan Masood, with a brilliant throw in the third over, provided an early breakthrough for Pakistan in the opening hour of the first day. Nishan Madushka remained unlucky as the throw went straight to thrash the stumps on the strik

Does drinking ice water burn calories?

Image
For anyone trying to lose weight, this question is an exciting one! If you simply want to know if your body burns calories warming up the water, the answer is yes. But if you want to know if drinking a lot of ice water can help you lose weight, or keep weight off, this "yes" needs to be qualified with some calculations. First of all, calories are case-sensitive. There are calories and then there are Calories. Calories with a big "c" are the ones used to describe the amount of energy contained in foods. A calorie with a little "c" is defined as the amount of energy it takes to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius. What most people think of as a Calorie is actually a kilo-calorie: It takes one Calorie to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water 1 degree Celsius. So when you drink a 140-Calorie can of cola, you are ingesting 140,000 calories. There is no cause for alarm, because the conversion applies across the board. When you b

PCB told to notify new BoG before chief’s election

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday directed the existing management committee of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to notify the new board of governors (BoG) within 15 days and then hold the election of the chairman within seven days. Justice Shahid Jamil Khan passed the order on a petition challenging the appointment of the PCB’s new management committee on July 5 and a change in the composition of the BoG. Petitioner Naveed Mushtaq Abbasi, a representative of Rawalpindi region, also assailed exclusion of his name from the BoG and proposed election for the PCB chairman through a changed BoG. In his 12-page judgement, the judge observed that the affairs of the PCB are constantly in news when there is any change in the government. Justice Khan maintained that by excluding the regions already represented in earlier two BoGs of the PCB, the election of the representatives of four regions shall be strictly in accordance with the regulation, if any. 5 reasons why too much sugar is bad for you

Image
Sugar is fine for you in small amounts, but too much can lead to weight gain, acne, type 2 diabetes, and can increase your risk of several serious medical conditions. From marinara sauce to peanut butter, added sugar can be found in even the most unexpected products. Many people rely on quick, processed foods for meals and snacks. Since these products often contain added sugar, it makes up a large proportion of their daily calorie intake. Sugar can lead to heart disease Chronically high insulin levels cause the muscle cells around each blood vessel in your arteries to grow faster than normal, leading to high blood pressure. What you can do: count the grams of sugar you’re consuming and aim to stick to the daily limit: 20g for women, 36g for men, 12g for children. It plays havoc with cholesterol levels. Recent studies show people consuming the highest level of added sugars also recorded the biggest spike in levels of unhealthy cholesterol, and the lowest levels of healthy chole

Combustion from gas stoves linked to high risk of blood cell cancers: Study

Image
Cooking with gas stoves can raise indoor levels of a chemical linked to a higher risk of leukaemia and other blood cell cancers, finds an alarming study. The study, published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, showed that a single gas cooktop burner on high or a gas oven set to 350 degrees Fahrenheit can raise indoor levels of the carcinogen benzene above those found in secondhand tobacco smoke. Benzene also drifts throughout a home and lingers for hours in home air, said researchers. "Benzene forms in flames and other high-temperature environments, such as the flares found in oil fields and refineries. We now know that benzene also forms in the flames of gas stoves in our homes," said Rob Jackson, Professor of Earth system science at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. "Good ventilation helps reduce pollutant concentrations, but we found that exhaust fans were often ineffective at eliminating benzene exposure," he added. The rese

20 incredible uses for petroleum jelly

Image
Petroleum jelly is one of those products that has a ridiculous amount of untapped potential. Sure, everyone knows that it'll hydrate your lips or skin but what about its lesser-known capabilities? We've got a ton of ideas for you. First a little about the product. Petroleum jelly is a mix of mineral oils and waxes. It was discovered by a chemist named Robert August Chesebrough in 1859. He had noticed that oil workers suffering from burns and other wounds got relief from rod wax, an unrefined byproduct of petroleum. Petroleum is known for providing a water-repelling barrier, which allows the skin to heal. After years of tweaking, Chesebrough developed the product Vaseline, and began selling it in 1870. More than 150 years later, the formula hasn't changed much. Petroleum jelly has an exceptionally long shelf life of three to 10 years, not that you'll need it to last that long once you start incorporating all of these uses into your daily life. How to Get Rid of Dandruff

Image
If you're avoiding all of your dark clothing, and a hat has suddenly become a necessary accessory, it might be time to face the facts:You have dandruff. It's annoying, it's frustrating and it's embarrassing, but the good news is that it's not that hard to get rid of. Dandruff is not contagious, and it's usually not caused by anything too serious. In fact, the most common cause of those flakes is dry skin. You might also notice dandruff if you're not washing your hair often enough — without frequent shampooing, the oil and skin cells can build up on your scalp and eventually flake off. Of course, dandruff can also be an indicator of more serious skin conditions. In many people, seborrheic dermatitis — a condition marked by oily, irritated skin — can cause flaky skin on the scalp and on other areas of the body. Allergies to hair care or scalp care products (also called contact dermatitis) and psoriasis are other contributors to dandruff, as is an excess o
