Second Test: Mehidy takes five as Pakistan bowled out for 274

Image
Spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz took five wickets as Bangladesh bowled out Pakistan for 274 on day two of the second Test at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi on Saturday. After Abdullah Shafique was bowled out by Taskin Ahmed in the first over, skipper Shan Masood and opener Saim Ayub built up a flamboyant partnership. Both the players made half-centuries but soon they fell with a couple of more wickets that included former captain Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel. Masood was routed by Mehidy Hasan on 57 while Ayub got stumped at 58. Mohammad Rizwan (18*) and Salman Ali Agha (0*) are on the crease. After tea break, third session will be played from 3:15pm to 5:15pm, then the game could be extended by half an hour to complete the day's overs. Spinner Abrar Ahmed and left-arm medium pacer Mir Hamza have replaced fast bowlers Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi, who has been released to spend time with his family. Whereas, Bangladesh brought Taskin in and rested Shoriful Isl

Can aloe treat skin problems?

Image
In 1973, a pair of Harvard University researchers began a decades-long investigation into the effects of air quality on public health. The study, which came to be known as the Harvard Six Cities Study, would be the first to conclusively link health and environmental quality. As a result of the study, many Americans turned to herbal remedies considered medicinally valuable in other nations, but eschewed by the U.S. medical establishment. The jury's still out on a few of these remedies, but some have proven effective. Aloe vera is a good example of a treatment that works. Those spiky, succulent desert plants have long been used as a remedy for burns, injuries and constipation. While studies question aloe's efficacy at treating burns -- some have shown it speeds skin's recovery while others have found it can delay it -- aloe's ability to help treat dry skin conditions is clearer. Psoriasis vulgaris (common psoriasis) is a skin disorder characterized by hyperactive ski

Rain washes out opening day of Pakistan-Bangladesh second Test

Image
Heavy rain washed out the first day of the second and final Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Rawalpindi on Friday. Overnight downpours delayed the toss and after more monsoon rains, umpires abandoned play for the day shortly after midday. “The first day’s play has been called off due to persistent rain and wet outfield,” Pakistan Cricket Board said. Both teams were still in their hotel and umpires were to inspect the ground only after the rain stopped, with the met office forecasting intermittent monsoon rain. It was a bad omen for a Pakistan team desperate to square the two-match series after Bangladesh won the first Test, also in Rawalpindi, on Sunday. Bangladesh’s 10-wicket victory was their first in 14 Tests against Pakistan. Pakistan have left out pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi from their 12-member squad, allowing him time to spend with his newly born son. A Shan Masood-led team with an all-pace bowling attack suffered a stunning loss to Bangladesh on the final

Burns: Types and Treatments

Image
It can happen so fast: One minute you're in full dinner prep mode, and the next you're cradling a swollen hand and wondering who moved the stove. If you've ever tangled with something hot and lost, then you know how painful a burn can be. You're not alone. About half a million Americans report burn injuries each year. More than half of the injuries reported happen to people ages 18 to 64, and the risk for men to get burns is twice that of women. There are many types of burns -- not all involve flames, but all can damage the skin and other bodily tissues. For example, scalds, which are liquid or steam burns, are the most common. If you've ever spilled hot coffee on yourself or stepped into a steaming hot shower, then you know the sting of a scald. Luckily, this type of burn doesn't usually cause permanent damage if treated quickly and properly. However, internal chemical burns from ingesting toxic materials can cause damage that's hard to treat. Because

Over 41% of Pakistani women suffer from anaemia, survey reveals

Image
A National Nutrition Survey has revealed that over 41% of Pakistani women suffer from anaemia, and another 22.4% are deficient in Vitamin A, highlighting the malnutrition and undernutrition crisis affecting the country’s female population. The survey also found that 4.4% of women are underweight, 24% are overweight, and 13.8% are obese. Health authorities, government officials, and international organisations on Tuesday urged the government to fulfil its commitments to maternal nutrition, align national guidelines with global standards. They also called on the concerned departmets to prioritise the development of a comprehensive maternal nutrition package in a landmark move to address the country’s maternal malnutrition crisis. Signed after the National Policy Dialogue on the Economic Case for Maternal Nutrition, this demand was articulated in the Bhurban Declaration. Notably, the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination organised the event in collabora

Can camphor treat skin problems?

Image
Camphor oil has been used as a pain reliever, but can it treat your skin? See pictures of unusual skin care ingredients. It cools. It stimulates. It disinfects. But can camphor, an oil obtained from trees or synthesized from turpentine, treat skin problems? Traditionally, camphor was an oil extracted from the bark and wood of the cinnamomum camphora tree, native to Vietnam, China and Japan. Medicinal use of the oil dates back to the Middle East around 600 AD, and it was revered as sacred in ancient Greece and Egypt. Since the 1920s, however, most camphor has been synthesized from rosin-based turpentine oil. People have used camphor to relieve pain, increase blood flow and treat infections. Today, you'll find camphor oil in products such as Vicks VapoRub, Caladryl and Campho-Phenique. Usually, these products are rubbed on the skin or inhaled. As a pain reliever, Camphor is often an essential ingredient of products that specialize in treating backaches and muscle and joint ache

Allergies and Immune System

Image
Your immune system is your body's defense system against invading agents, such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites. These agents are called antigens. White blood cells are our main defense against these antigens. Your body makes many different types of white blood cells that work 24 hours a day to keep you healthy. One important type of white blood cell is a lymphocyte. These are made in the marrow of your bones. You may have as many as 2 trillion lymphocytes in your bloodstream at any one time. Two major types of lymphocytes involved in protecting the body against invaders are T lymphocyte cells and B lymphocyte cells. T lymphocyte cells destroy cells that have been infected or damaged by the antigens. B lymphocytes are found in immunity-related organs such as the lymph nodes. They direct the making of immunoglobulin E, called IgE. IgE is a special disease-fighting protein known as an antibody. It binds to an antigen in your body, such as bacteria, rendering it harmless. Jay Shah, the current honorary secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been elected unopposed as the chairman of International Cricket Council (ICC), confirmed the cricketing governing body on Tuesday. Shah has served as the BCCI's honorary secretary since October 2019 and chair of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021. Replacing Greg Barclay, who was elected in November 2020, he will assume the position on December 1, 2024. Shah was the sole nominee for the chairmanship. Shah earlier claimed that he had enough support to become the new ICC chairman after Barclay announced earlier this month that he would not continue his journey in his current role. After being elected to the prestigious role, Shah said his goal is to expand cricket’s global reach as cricket is set to be included in the Los Angeles Olympics 2028. “I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council,” Shah stated. “I am committed to working clos

Cristiano Ronaldo will be receiving an award from UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin as the all-time top-scorer of the Champions League, the European football governing body confirmed on Tuesday. Ronaldo, 39, made history in Europe as he bagged 140 goals in 183 matches while playing for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus and also lifted the elusive title five times, which is the second most by any player. The 39-year-old lifted the title four times with Real Madrid (2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018) and once with Man Utd (2008). He is also the only player to score in three different finals (2008 against Chelsea, 2014 against Atletico Madrid and 2017 against Juventus). Are carrots really good for your eyesight?

Image
To ease kids' suspicion of vegetables, parents often feed them the adage that carrots will spare them from corrective vision care. But is there any truth to the commonly held belief that carrots are good for your eyes? Well, yes and no. Carrots won't improve your visual acuity if you have less than perfect vision. For example, a diet of carrots won't give a blind person 20/20 vision. But the vitamins found in the vegetable can help promote overall eye health. Carrots contain beta-carotene, a substance that the body converts to vitamin A, an important nutrient for eye health. For centuries, carrots have been connected with health benefits. In the Middle Ages, carrots were believed to cure anything from sexually transmitted diseases to snakebites. Carrots became associated with vision, particularly night vision, during World War II. The British Royal Air Force published a story that said skilled fighter pilot John "Cats' Eyes" Cunningham could thank a steady

Study reveals noise pollution troubling well-being of Gen Z

Image
A new study has revealed that noise pollution in the extravagant Gulf city of Dubai is a major concern for the Generation Z as many of them consider it an important factor troubling their well-being. Notably, the study was conducted by Buro Happold’s Urban C:Labs in collaboration with Heriot-Watt University in Dubai. It will be presented at the Inter-Noise 2024 conference in Nantes, France. The study was led by Pooja Ganatra, who is a senior sustainability consultant, noise specialist and lecturer at Heriot-Watt University Dubai, along with Gregory Maltsev and Kathy Wong, who are consultants based in Dubai and Hong Kong. As the study’s demographic is extensively aware about mental health dilemmas as well as the environmental aspects influencing them, the research has been deemed particularly relevant. This had led Pakistan’s red ball coach, Jason Gillespie, to mention the possibility of Shaheen missing the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh due to the impending arrival of his child. “Shaheen can miss Bangaladesh Test matches due to childbirth,” Gillespie was quoted saying. “We can give him [some] rest if he wants to stay with his wife till then,” he said. via Original Source

Do certain cleansers cause itchiness?

Image
When you walk down the cleanser aisle in your local drugstore, the choices can be overwhelming. There are facial cleansers for every skin type, products claiming to cure every skin problem, body washes that smell like every fruit combination imaginable and soaps that come in bar, foam and liquid form. How do you know which is the best option for your skin? With so many products out there, the most important thing is how your skin will feel afterward. High on most people's lists is avoiding dry skin and the itchiness, irritation and fine lines that come with it. Though dry skin, or xerosis, isn't a serious medical condition, it can be extremely uncomfortable and can have unattractive symptoms. In severe cases, dry skin can lead to a more serious infection. It's often unavoidable because it can be caused by weather, geographic location, air conditioning, pollution and sun exposure -- all elements that are almost impossible to avoid on a daily basis. What are the white dots on my nails?

Image
You finally finished repainting those end tables for the guest room. As you're washing up, you notice something on your fingernail. You try to scrub it off and realize the little white dots are not paint; they're actually part of your nail. You show the spots to your roommate and he says it could mean you have a calcium deficiency. Or wait, is it zinc? It's definitely some sort of nutritional deficit, of that he's certain. But you start to wonder if he's right because just last month, he told you that washing your face in egg whites will decrease the size of your pores. However, when you mentioned that to your dermatologist, she said that nothing can actually shrink your pores. So what are these white spots and how'd you get them? One of the most common causes for these little white spots, which can show up on both fingernails and toenails, is a condition called leukonychia. Although the name sounds pretty serious, the condition typically isn't. And whi

Thailand confirms mpox case is clade 1b, second outside of Africa

Image
Thailand on Thursday confirmed that a mpox case reported this week was the clade 1b strain of the virus, the second confirmed case of the variant outside of Africa. The case is a 66-year-old European man who arrived in Thailand last week from an unspecified African country where the disease was spreading. “The test results confirm that he is infected with the Clade 1b strain of monkeypox, which is the first case diagnosed in Thailand, but this man is likely infected from an endemic country,” Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, director-general of the Department of Disease Control, told Reuters. He said no other local infections had been detected through contact tracing. Clade 1b has triggered global concern due to the ease with which it spreads through routine close contact. A case of the variant was confirmed last week in Sweden and linked to a growing outbreak in Africa, the first sign of its spread outside the continent. The World Health Organisation declared the recent outbreak o

Mpox not going to take Europe into lockdown, says WHO official

Image
A World Health Organization official stressed on Tuesday that mpox, regardless of whether it is the new or old strain, is not the new COVID, as authorities know how to control its spread. "Behaviour change, non-discriminatory public health action, and mpox vaccination contributed to controlling the outbreak, said Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, in a UN media briefing. Kluge said the risk to the general population was low. "Are we going to go in lockdown in the WHO European region, it's another Covid-19? The answer is clearly: 'no'," he said. "So will we choose to put the systems in place to control and eliminate mpox globally? Or we will enter another cycle of panic and neglect? How we respond now and in the years to come will prove a critical test for Europe and the world. "We can and must tackle mpox together," he added. Mpox, a viral infection that causes pus-filled lesions and flu-like symptoms, is usually mild but can

How to treat a torn nail?

Image
It can happen so quickly: You snag your nail on the car door, you stub your toe, or you absent-mindedly chip away at your nail polish, and suddenly you're left with a torn nail -- in severe cases, you could even separate a nail from your nail bed. Many things can cause painful torn or separated nails, but those nails will heal if you take the proper steps. To understand how your nail tears, it helps to know what a nail is. Nails -- on fingers or toes -- are composed of a nail bed and a nail plate. The nail bed is the soft area of skin beneath the nail plate, which is the hard surface of the nail. Cells at the bottom of the nail bed make up the nail matrix and produce layers of a protein called keratin -- keratin builds the nail plate and anchors it to the nail bed. When your nail tears or separates, the nail matrix grows the new nail. The ways you can tear your nail plate are endless, but the most common way people tear their nails is by trimming them incorrectly -- they cut t
