How to disinfect a toothbrush?

Image
You don't have to be a dentist to know that regular tooth-brushing is the cornerstone of good oral hygiene, but what the average person may not know is that the instrument he uses to clean his teeth may also need cleaning. A toothbrush's job is to remove plaque and food particles from the teeth. As a result, it becomes contaminated with bacteria, blood, saliva, and even old toothpaste over time. The American Dental Association recommends that people change their toothbrush every three to four months (even if disinfected), but even this may not be enough to keep a toothbrush from becoming contaminated. And since they aren't required to be sold in a sterile package, a toothbrush can already have bacteria on it right out of the box. While cleaning your teeth with a "dirty" toothbrush might sound both like a waste of time and rather gross, currently there is no public research indicating that brushing with a contaminated toothbrush will lead to recontamination of t

The series against South Africa remains uncertain, as Cricket South Africa has yet to grant security clearance following inspections of the venue earlier this week. This comes in the wake of unrest in Bangladesh during July and August, which resulted in the deaths of several hundred people. Shakib was a member of parliament for the Awami League-led government, the target of the protests. Since the fall of the Awami League-led government on 5th August, Shakib has encountered complications and has not been in the country. "I am available for the South Africa series but since there's a lot happening back home, naturally not everything depends on me," Shak

Shakib likely to play against South Africa despite legal troubles

Image
Shakib Al Hasan’s participation in the upcoming home Test series against South Africa next month appears to be on track, barring any injury concerns or selection issues, according to a Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official. Kava is natural and legal, but is it safe?

Image
Traditional kava, the national drink of Fiji, is a mildly narcotic drink made from mixing the powdered root of the pepper plant with water. Drinking it results in a numb feeling and a sense of relaxation. If you've come across kava in the dietary supplement section of your favorite health food store, or stumbled across a kava bar in your hometown, you're probably curious what the hype's all about. Or perhaps you are familiar with this legal, all-natural high. Either way, you may benefit from a little background on the substance and some risks you should know about. What Is Kava? Kava — also referred to as kava kava, Yaqona, 'awa, ava, sakau, Tonga and countless other names — is the Tongan word given for the plant Piper methysticum. Did Cristiano Ronaldo just hint at potential 'side quest' with Fatal Fury?

While the teaser did not feature the five-time Ballon d'Or award winner as a character in Fatal Fury, it depicted someone attempting to break out of a room. While the potential inclusion of the renowned athlete in the violent fighter may seem unusual, it may still be a smart move by the game's developer, Esports Illustrated reported. Wit

How to treat sore gum?

Image
Maybe a time or two you've had a pair of jeans become a little too tight. Whether they shrunk in the dryer or you added a few extra pounds to fill out the curves, one consequence of the body-hugging fit is how hard it is to get anything in and out of the pockets. Reaching for cash, lipstick or a comb nearly causes your hand to get stuck in the process. How does that relate to sore gums? Gums can have pockets too, but you want them to be tight. Teeth and gums should cling together so tightly that you can get little more than dental floss into the gumline. So when something larger, like a poppy seed or a long shredded piece of a crunchy vegetable works its way into the space between, it becomes almost impossible to stop thinking about until you get it out. This temporary, irritating soreness happens sometimes in even the healthiest of mouths, but when gums lose some of their attachment to teeth, gaps at the gumline and below become larger and looser, and food, plaque and bacteri

Using Ginger to treat upset stomach

Image
Ginger is another well-documented home remedy for stomach disorders and is a good choice to treat upset stomach. How Ginger Works Ginger appears to reduce inflammation in a similar way to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin and ibuprofen; it slows associated biochemical pathways. Ginger is also a mild stimulant that promotes circulation. Ginger's root contains chemicals called gingerols and shogaols. When using ginger to treat upset stomach, these chemicals relax the intestinal tract, preventing motion sickness and relieving the nausea, vomiting, colicky stomach cramps, and diarrhea that often accompany stomach flu. Ginger and Motion Sickness This herb has been studied as a remedy for motion sickness. The British medical journal Lancet, for example, reported in 1982 that ginger is a "very effective" motion sickness medicine. Several studies show that two or three ginger capsules taken one half hour before a trip and two to three capsules

Endrick, another Champions League debutant, wrapped up Madrid's win with a low drive in stoppage time. Stuttgart had the better of an entertaining opening period but Carlo Ancelotti's team have a habit of grinding out victories when up against the wall and they took the three points despite the visitors' impressive efforts. Are there any tricks to prevent vomiting?

Image
It's a terrible moment of realization when you feel nausea start to build. Saliva floods your mouth, sweat beads on your brow and your heart races. You take a few deep breaths -- a physical reflex designed to protect the lungs from accidentally inhaling vomit -- and calculate how quickly you can travel to the nearest restroom or if necessary, a trashcan. You're not sure if it was the sushi you ate for lunch or the virus that's been making the rounds at work. Whatever the cause of your impending puke fit, the chemoreceptor triggers zone (CTZ) located in the fourth ventricle of your brain has taken over. This vomit control center contains a concentrated number of serotonin, dopamine, opioid and acetylcholine receptors, along with "P," an occasionally prolific neurotransmitter substance that signals your body to blow chunks. The receptors in the CTZ may be in the brain, but they lie outside the blood-brain barrier. Because of their location, they can be penetrat

No matter what your skin-care regime, chances are you use a moisturizer daily -- and if you don't, you probably should, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Natural skin-care experts say whipping up your own cream or lotion in your home kitchen can save money, cut down on wasteful packaging and protect you from harmful ingredients lurking in some conventional products. The benefits of Coconut Oil

Image
Coconuts are an underutilized food with a hidden wealth of nutritional value for the body. The fat content plays into the mass confusion surrounding healthy and unhealthy fats, but there are a surprising number of benefits with this unusual nut. The coconut provides a very unique type of oil, made of several ingredients including medium chain fatty acids, lauric acid and saturated fat. It is semi-solid at room temperature as a soft, almost waxy substance. Coconut oil is prized for its health-giving properties, considered one of the beneficial oils to use when cooking. Coconut oil is stable in high heat while many other oils are damaged upon heating, making them very unhealthy for cooking. Over the past several years, nutritional advice has focused on the avoidance of fat, particularly saturated fat. We are now learning, or relearning, what many cultures have known for centuries. Healthy fats can include some saturated fat. The quality of animal fats will depend on the health of the

Addressing the media in Karachi, Younis revealed that he often hears people urging Babar Azam to improve his performance, adding that Babar can surpass even his own tally and score 15,000 Test runs. "There are high expectations from Babar, and while players use social media, their real answers should come through the bat and ball," Younis said. Reflecting on the value of performance over leadership, Younis drew a parallel with India's Virat Kohli, noting that Kohli performed better after stepping down from the captaincy. "Performance is what matters; captaincy is a small thing," he remarked. The former captain didn’t hold back when discussing the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), criticising the organisation for making abrupt decisions that impact the team’s stability. "
