5 Home Remedies for Itching

Image
To scratch or not to scratch, that is the question. When confronted with an itch, most of us tend to throw self-discipline out the door and scratch to our skin's content. While that may prove momentarily satisfying, scratching excessively can injure your skin. And if you break the skin, you leave yourself open to infection. Itching, medically known as pruritus, is caused by stimuli bugging some part of our skin. There are a lot of places to bother on the body, too. The average adult has 20 square feet (2 square meters) of skin, all open to the world of irritants. When something bothers our skin, an itch is a built-in defense mechanism that alerts the body that someone is knocking. We respond to an itch with a scratch, as most people want to remove the problem. But the scratching can also set you up for the "itch-scratch" cycle, where one leads to the other endlessly. An itch can range from a mild nuisance to a disrupting, damaging, and sleep-depriving fiasco. Itches h...

Image
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Thursday its analysis of samples from the first severe case of bird flu in the country last week showed mutations not seen in samples from an infected backyard flock on the patient's property. The health body said, the risk to the general public from the outbreak has not changed and remains low. Last week, the US reported its first severe case of the virus, in a Louisiana resident above the age of 65, who was suffering from severe respiratory illness. The patient was infected with the D1.1 genotype of the virus that was recently detected in wild birds and poultry in the US, and not the B3.13 genotype detected in dairy cows, human cases and some poultry in multiple states. How to find pressure points to cure headaches

Image
Getting rid of headaches by applying slight force or pressure to certain pressure points is called acupressure. Acupressure is derived from the ancient Chinese healing method of acupuncture. Pressure points are clusters of nerves located at various points on the body, which help regulate blood circulation. Headaches -- especially those brought on by anxiety, the common cold or menstruation -- are caused by a tightness and stiffness in the neck and face muscles that inhibit blood circulation. Stimulating the pressure points by massaging them will help relax the tight muscles and increase blood circulation, thus relieving the headache. Now, we'll learn where those points are and what to do. Get ready to say goodbye to your headache: Locate your temples. They're on either side of your head about 1 inch (2.54 centimeters) behind your eyes. Place your thumbs on your temples and simultaneously massage them by gently rotating your thumbs in a counter-clockwise direction. Place y...

The moment sparked a brief exchange of words between the two players, prompting Australian opener Usman Khawaja to intervene and defuse the tension. The International Cricket Council (ICC) reviewed the incident under Article 2.12 of its Code of Conduct (CoC), which prohibits inappropriate physical contact in cricket. The regulation states that players breach this clause if they "deliberately, recklessly, or negligently" engage in physical contact with others on the field. How to moisturize your nails?

Image
Most people don't give a lot of thought to their nails beyond applying a little polish or trying not to gnaw them during a stressful commute. But your nails are actually very important. They protect the tips of your fingers and toes, and they aid you in many of life's small tasks. And like it or not, gnarly nails can tell a lot about an individual's attention -- or lack thereof -- to detail. Most people can agree that a jagged or broken nail has a big impact on seemingly mundane tasks, such as pulling on a pair of socks or pantyhose. Despite their practical importance, however, nails get very little regard or appreciation -- few of us know how to keep our nails healthy and in good shape. Almost one quarter of the people in the United States have what's known as brittle nail syndrome. Brittle nails break and chip easily, and they may also peel off in layers. They are much more likely to have jagged, rough edges instead of a smooth surface. Although some health condi...

5 Reasons why you should have a healthy breakfast

Image
Breakfast is often considered the most important meal of the day, but sometimes it’s hard to fit a healthy breakfast into a rushed morning. Here we give you a few reasons why it’s worth getting up a bit earlier and having breakfast, as well as some useful tips for ensuring you start your day with the right nutrition. 1. Ups your energy levels Did you ever wonder why breakfast is called breakfast? It’s because we’re breaking the overnight fast as we just spent the night sleeping and so wouldn’t have eaten for quite a few hours. During that time our body still uses fuel to maintain its functions, and so our blood sugar levels and glucose stores are getting pretty low by morning. Having breakfast helps us to refuel and increase energy levels. Including a glass of milk as part of a healthy breakfast is a great way to bring your sleepy child’s blood glucose levels back up and give them the energy they need to get them through the morning. 2. Boosts your performance Refuelling our bod...

How to keep your skin from drying out overnight?

Image
Do you wake up with a parched, flaky face that makes you want to dive back under the covers? Known to doctors as xerosis, dryness occurs when low humidity levels, sun exposure, harsh soaps, acne treatments and other abrasive factors degrade the skin's natural moisture barrier, leading to peeling, irritation and cracks. The condition often worsens in winter, thanks to cold temperatures, bitter gusts of wind and dry indoor air. But you can't just worry about your skin when the sun goes down. Address your dry complexion throughout the day by wearing a moisturizer with SPF, opting for a gentle cleanser and avoiding dehydrating products or cosmetics. When it comes to serious prevention and treatment, they don't call it beauty sleep for nothing. Since cell turnover and water loss happen faster while you snooze, nighttime really is the right time for locking in moisture and banishing flakiness. But how can you maximize those precious eight hours (or, let's be honest, seve...
