Why are more young people getting cancer?

Image
Research has shown that growing numbers of people are getting cancer in early adulthood and middle age with sharp rises seen especially in gastrointestinal cancers. These gastrointestinal cancers include those of the colon, stomach and pancreas, whereas, there is a surge in breast and uterine cancers as well, reported Columbia Magazine. A recent study has found that cases of gastrointestinal cancers in Americans under the age of fifty rose by 15% between 2010 and 2019, while breast cancer diagnoses increased by 8% in women under fifty. According to experts, the patterns are perplexing considering that cancer rates among older adults have declined in recent years. Colon and rectal surgeon Beatrice Dionigi was in medical school fifteen years ago, when she was taught that colon cancer, which is long known as a “silent killer” for its ability to advance undetected, was a disease of old age, mainly striking people in their fifties and beyond. However, as she embarked on her career as...

PCB breaks silence on reports claiming Mohsin Naqvi's resignation

Image
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday denied reports suggesting that Chairman Mohsin Naqvi had resigned from his post following his recent appointment as the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Speculation regarding Naqvi’s resignation began circulating on various sports websites and social media platforms over the weekend, with several reports claiming that his increasing responsibilities, particularly after assuming the ACC presidency, might compel him to step down from the PCB chairmanship. However, officials from the PCB dismissed such reports, terming them “baseless”. A senior board official said, “There is no truth to the reports about Mr. Naqvi’s resignation. He continues to perform his duties as PCB Chairman and remains fully committed to the development of Pakistan cricket.” Naqvi, who also serves as the Federal Minister for Interior, was elected unopposed as the ACC President in early April, becoming the first Pakistani to hold the position since 2008. Sucralose may increases appetite

Image
Mounting evidence has increasingly suggested a connection between diet sodas and other low- or no-calorie edibles and weight gain, leading the World Health Organisation (WHO) to advise against using non-sugar sweeteners for shedding weight. "Replacing free sugars with non-sugar sweeteners does not help people control their weight for a long term," said Director of WHO’s Department of Nutrition and Food Safety Dr Francesco Branca, then in the advisory. Now, a fresh piece of research may offer insights into why excessive consumption of the artificial sweetener sucralose might be ineffective. Contrary to the expectation of reduced food intake signals, the study indicates that sucralose, when consumed in a beverage, triggers an increase in appetite, CNN reported. According to the lead researcher, Dr Katie Page, an associate professor and director of the Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine, "Sucralose...

The tournament, comprising six teams, is set to commence on Friday, April 11, with defending champions Islamabad United facing two-time winners Lahore Qalandars at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. The details related to the commentary panel reveal that England Test captain Sir Alastair Cook is all set to make his PSL debut behind the mic as he is part of the panel. Cook will be joined by former MCC President Mark Nicholas — a renowned voice in cricket commentary since retiring from competitive cricket in 1995. They will be joined by fellow countrymen Dominic Cork and Mark Butcher, while South Africa’s Jean-Paul Duminy and Mike Haysman will also be part of the panel. From Bangladesh, it will be Athar Ali Khan, and he will be joined by New Zealand's former Test cricketer Martin Guptill. Australia's two-time ICC Women's World...

This habit can increase depression risk in teen girls, study finds

Image
A teenage girl unable to get off her smartphone or other devices might be at risk of losing sleep and increase in depression, a new Swedish study says. Teenagers who spend extra time using screens tend to get worse sleep — in terms of sleep quality and duration — researchers wrote in the journal PLOS Global Public Health on Wednesday. Screen time also causes teens to delay sleep until later hours, affecting their sleeping cycles, they found, according to UPI. Researchers also found that these sleep disturbances are linked to later depression symptoms in girls but not in boys. "We found that adolescents who reported longer screen times also developed poorer sleep habits over time," concluded the research team led by Sebastian Hokby, a doctoral student at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden. "In turn, this led to increased depression levels, especially among girls." For the study, researchers tracked more than 4,800 Swedish teens between 12 and 16 years of age a...

New Zealand beat Pakistan by 43 runs to sweep ODI series 3-0

Image
Pakistan’s brittle batting was exposed again as a Ben Sears-inspired New Zealand won the third and final one-day international by 43 runs Saturday to sweep the series 3-0. The tourists were dismissed for 221 off 40 overs in response to New Zealand’s 264-8, in a match shortened to 42 overs after a delayed start at Mount Maunganui. It followed the pattern of the first two games, with the hosts winning the opener in Napier by 73 runs, followed by an 84-run victory in Hamilton. New Zealand also dominated the preceding T20 series, winning 4-1. Pakistan struggled throughout the tour to adjust to the sustained bounce and movement of New Zealand’s seam attack and their batsmen were again guilty of rash shots at Bay Oval. Aggressive pace bowler Sears claimed 5-34 to follow his five-wicket bag in Hamilton, with four of his victims falling to short-pitched deliveries. Fellow seamer Jacob Duffy, who was a handful in both series, took 2-40, including the wicket of Mohammad Rizwan for 37 in ...

Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo says athletics saved him from life of crime

Image
Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo said on Wednesday he could have become a delinquent if the sport of athletics had not given him a focus. Tebogo, who stunned the field in Paris last year to became Botswana’s first Olympic gold medallist in any sport, said he would take the lessons he learned from his childhood into his new role as a global ambassador for the Kids Athletics scheme. “Sport has really helped me a lot because I think without sport … probably I would be a criminal by now,” 21-year-old Tebogo told reporters on a video conference call. “In the neighbourhood where I grew up there were a lot of criminals, it was the only way to survive. “But then with sport I knew I had to go to school and with training you are tired. You don’t have time to roam the streets and go into people’s houses,” he added. “So once I discovered that I tried to pull in a few friends of mine … and now they are playing football. “We always talk about if this didn’t work out, where would we be?” ...

Lionel Messi, Inter Miami lose to LAFC in CONCACAF Champions Cup

Image
Los Angeles FC (LAFC) sent Lionel Messi and Inter Miami spinning to their first defeat of the season, scoring an upset 1-0 victory in their CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal first-leg clash. A 57th-minute strike from Los Angeles-born El Salvador international Nathan Ordaz handed LAFC a precious advantage heading into next week’s return leg in Florida. Unbeaten in nine games across all competitions since the start of the season, Messi and Miami arrived in Los Angeles as the form team of Major League Soccer (MLS). But after a cagey first half that saw neither side manage to get on top, Los Angeles raised their intensity after the break and immediately began causing problems for the visitors on Wednesday. LAFC fullback Ryan Hollingshead squandered a golden chance in the 54th minute, blasting his shot well wide of goal after bursting into the penalty area on the overlap. The home team made the all-important breakthrough three minutes later with the 21-year-old homegrown striker Or...

New Zealand thump Pakistan in second ODI to secure decisive lead in series

Image
Pakistan were outclassed by New Zealand and bowled out for 208 runs in the second ODI while chasing the hosts' 293-run target at the Seddon Park on Wednesday. With today's win, the Black Caps have now secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match 50-over series. The Green Shirts will now face Black Caps in third ODI set to take place on April 5. The innings began with Abdullah Shafique (1) falling early to O'Rourke, followed by Imam-ul-Haq (3 ) and Babar Azam (1), both dismissed cheaply by Jacob Duffy. With three quick wickets down, Pakistan's innings appeared shaky, and things only worsened as Mohammad Rizwan (5) and Salman Agha (9) departed without making any significant contribution. Tayyab Tahir (13) attempted to stabilise the innings, but New Zealand bowlers continued to apply relentless pressure, ensuring that Pakistan never gained any momentum in the chase. All-rounder Faheem Ashraf, however, displayed fighting spirit and notched up a brilliant half-...
