Are electronic cigarettes more harmful than regular smoking?

Image
New study by the University of California, Davis, has revealed that certain illegal disposable e-cigarettes may pose even greater health risks than traditional cigarettes. The research found alarmingly high levels of toxic heavy metals — including lead — in some widely used vape products. Once marketed as a safer alternative to conventional smoking, vaping is now facing heightened scrutiny as emerging studies point to its potential dangers. The UC Davis study examined three unauthorized yet popular e-cigarette brands — ELF Bar, Esco, and Flum Pebble — all of which are easily available in the market despite lacking approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Researchers warn that exposure to heavy metals through these devices could lead to serious long-term health consequences, urging regulatory authorities to take swift action. Researchers discovered significant concentrations of three heavy metals—lead, nickel, and antimony—in both heavily and lightly flavored va...

Ronaldo opts to skip Club World Cup for rest

Image
Cristiano Ronaldo, the iconic Portuguese forward, has revealed that he declined multiple invitations to play in the Club World Cup, choosing instead to prioritize rest and recovery as he prepares himself for the challenges of a long and grueling season. The Portuguese star made the comments after signing a new two-year deal with Al-Nassr that will keep him at the club beyond his 42nd birthday. The Saudi Pro League club announced on Thursday that Ronaldo had signed a two-year contract which would keep him at the club past his 42nd birthday. Speculation over the 40-year-old's plans intensified last month when FIFA President Gianni Infantino said discussions were underway about Ronaldo playing in the Club World Cup, despite Al-Nassr failing to qualify. "I had some offers to play in the World Cup but I think it didn’t make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long as it is the World Cup season at the end of the year...

Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a two-year contract extension with Al Nassr, the Saudi Pro League side said on Thursday, which will keep the Portugal forward at the club past his 42nd birthday. Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr in 2022 after leaving Manchester United to become a free agent, has scored 93 goals in 105 appearances for them in all competitions. “A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let’s make history together,” Ronaldo said in a post on X. Ronaldo arrived in Al Nassr on a two-and-a-half-year contract soon after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. That made him the highest-paid athlete in the world and he has topped the list for the last three years, according to Forbes. At the age of 40, Ronaldo’s estimated total earnings are around $275 million. Cristiano Ronaldo has shown few signs of slowing down, with the forward leading Portugal to a second UEFA Nations League title this month when they beat neighbours Spain in the final. Australia ahead by 82 runs as Test against West Indies hangs in balance

Image
West Indies' pace attack again exposed the vulnerability of the Australian top-order batting as the tourists stuttered to 92 for four in their second innings at stumps on the second day of the first Test at Kensington Oval on Thursday. Trailing on first innings by just ten runs after the Caribbean side were dismissed at tea for 190 in reply to the Aussies' first innings total of 180, the match is balanced on a knife's edge as Australia lead by 82 runs with six wickets in hand. Another eventful day when ten wickets fell after 14 tumbled on day one also featured contentious television umpiring decisions which left the West Indies feeling aggrieved. Travis Head, so often the counter-attacking star for the men from Down Under in all formats of the game, will carry the battle into the third morning with all-rounder Beau Webster after all four West Indies bowlers used in the second innings so far claimed a wicket each. Wicketless in the first innings, Alzarri Joseph was fir...

Study warns declining child vaccine coverage puts millions at risk

Image
Global efforts to vaccinate children against deadly diseases are weakening due to economic disparities, COVID-19 disruptions, and widespread misinformation, putting millions of lives in danger, a study warned on Wednesday. These trends all increase the threat of future outbreaks of preventable diseases, the researchers said, while sweeping foreign aid cuts threaten previous progress in vaccinating the world's children. A new study published in The Lancet journal looked at childhood vaccination rates across 204 countries and territories. It was not all bad news. An immunisation programme by the World Health Organization was estimated to have saved an estimated 154 million lives over the last 50 years. And vaccination coverage against diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, measles, polio and tuberculosis doubled between 1980 and 2023, the international team of researchers found. However the gains slowed in the 2010s, when measles vaccinations decreased in aroun...

Head confident new-look Australia can thrive without Smith and Labuschagne

Image
Travis Head said Monday Australia were experienced enough to cope as they prepare for their first Test without Steve Smith or Marnus Labuschagne since 2018. An out-of-form Labuschagne has been dropped for the opening Test against the West Indies in Barbados this week, while fellow batting stalwart Smith is nursing an injured finger. Sam Konstas and Josh Inglis, who have only played two Tests each, compared to the combined 175 of Smith and Labuschagne, replace them. But Head said he was not concerned. "They (Smith and Labuschagne) are still around the squad, so it still feels similar at the moment in the build-up," he told reporters in the West Indies. "Getting into the game will be a little bit of a new look, but it's guys who have already played, guys with experience already in a short amount of Test match cricket." Not since the Boxing Day Test against India in 2018 –- when Smith was serving a year-long ban for ball-tampering -- have Australia fielded ...

Carboni, the 20-year-old Argentine who had not featured for Inter in over two years, then appeared in the 92nd minute to give the Italians victory. “Our opponents play with their hearts and to counter that as a team we need to play with more pride, be humble and know how to suffer,” Martinez told broadcaster DAZN after Inter were made to work hard for the win. 200,000 unknown viruses uncovered deep in the ocean

Image
Almost 200,000 of the infectious pathogens were found during a global marine life expedition, which took over 10 years to complete. Most of the viruses are harmless to humans but can infect marine life, such as whales and crustaceans. The findings were published in the journal Cell. Scientists have said that the discovery of all these viruses is important because they can teach us more about life on the planet and the impact of climate change. The viruses could help researchers calculate the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere as organisms in the sea help to recycle oxygen. As oceans are known to absorb and store a lot of CO2, life in the ocean is needed to help covert this compound into other forms because too much CO2 could acidifying oceans and kill off marine life. Therefore, this vast number of viruses could actually be a positive thing from a climate change perspective. Lots of the viruses were found in the ocean, which surprised the researchers ...

ICC under fire for Jay Shah-focused WTC Final highlights

Image
The International Cricket Council is facing intense criticism after releasing World Test Championship Final highlights that disproportionately featured chairman Jay Shah, overshadowing South Africa's historic victory over Australia at Lord's. The 45-second promotional video has drawn widespread mockery for prioritising the administrator over the athletes who decided the match. The controversial video opens with a panoramic shot of the Lord's before abruptly cutting to Shah's grand entrance. An analysis reveals the chairman appeared 11 times in the 23-shot sequence, including multiple close-ups of him clapping and observing. In contrast, Player of the Match Aiden Markram was shown just twice, while Australian captain Pat Cummins appeared only briefly. South Africa's winning captain Temba Bavuma featured five times — fewer than half of Shah's appearances. "How many runs did Jay Shah score in this final? How many wickets?" asked Sri Lankan journal...

ICC likely to amend boundary catch regulations

Image
The International Cricket Council (ICC) is set to introduce a new boundary catching rule to make ‘bunny hop’ catches illegal. The ‘bunny hop’ catches were taken by Michael Neser, Tom Banton, and Matt Renshaw in different editions of the Big Bash League (BBL). The catch, made illegal, saw Neser catching the ball with both hands; however, his momentum took him over the rope during the BBL 2023. The Australian cricketer tossed the ball mid-air while airborne, landed beyond the boundary, leapt again, and batted the ball back into the field with both feet off the ground, then re-entered the playing area to complete the catch. Tom Banton and Matt Renshaw completed similar catches during the BBL. However, under the new rule being added to the ICC Playing Conditions this month—and later to the MCC’s Laws of Cricket in October 2026—an airborne fielder will be allowed to make contact with the ball only once while outside the boundary and must return to the field of play for the catch to be...

The match ended 2–2 after extra time, with Ronaldo scoring a key goal before Portugal held their nerve to win 5–3 on penalties. Ronaldo’s 138th international goal took the final to a shootout, with Alvaro Morata’s miss proving costly for Spain as Ruben Neves struck the winning spot kick to spark wild scenes of celebration, with emotion overwhelming the veteran captain. Spain’s exhilarating 5–4 victory over France in Thursday’s semi-final had ensured Luis de la Fuente’s side continued an unbeaten run stretching back to March 2023 ahead of Sunday’s showpiece final in Munich. They looked on course for another trophy, following last year’s European Championship triumph, when Martín Zubimendi tapped in his second international goal in the 21st minute. The holders’ lead did not last long, however, as flying Portugal full-back Nuno Mendes slotted home the eq...

Man bitten 200 times sparks new antivenom hope

Image
Tim Friede was feeling particularly down on the day after the September 11 attacks, so he went to his basement and let two of the world's deadliest snakes bite him. Four days later, he woke up from a coma. "I know what it feels like to die from snakebite," Friede told AFP via video call from his home in the small town of Two Rivers, Wisconsin in the United States. This experience might put most people off snakes entirely, but Friede simply vowed to be more careful next time. From 2000 to 2018, he allowed himself to be bitten by snakes more than 200 times. He also injected himself with their venom over 650 times. Friede endured this pain because he wanted to achieve total immunity to venom, a practice called mithridatism which should not be tried at home. After a couple of years, Friede started to believe he could be the basis for a better kind of antivenom. The former truck mechanic, who does not have a university degree, long struggled to be taken seriously by s...

Ronaldo ends Germany hoodoo, sends Portugal to Nations League final

Image
Cristiano Ronaldo scored the winner in a 2-1 victory over Germany in Munich on Wednesday, sending Portugal through to the Nations League final and breaking his run of bad fortune against the Germans. Ronaldo’s 68th-minute tap-in, a record-extending 137th international goal, sealed a first win over Germany after five losses – his longest streak against any national side without tasting victory. After a stuttering first half, Florian Wirtz produced a moment of magic to give Germany the lead three minutes after half-time, starting and finishing a clever burst through the middle and heading in the opener. Portugal’s Francisco Conceicao ran 35 metres to score a brilliant solo goal, levelling things up with half an hour remaining. The stage was then set for Ronaldo, who had missed two solid chances earlier, to land the telling blow – turning in a Nuno Mendes pass from close range. Portugal, winners of the inaugural Nations League in 2019, will now face either European champions Spain ...
