Australia captain Pat Cummins and fellow paceman Josh Hazlewood will sit out another Ashes Test with injury while opening batter Usman Khawaja, who suffered back spasms in Perth, has been retained in an unchanged squad for the second match in Brisbane. Cricket Australia said Cummins would travel with the squad, as he did for Perth, despite being unavailable to play. Cummins has been sidelined with a lumbar stress injury since Australia swept West Indies in the Caribbean in July. Hazlewood, part of Australia’s triumvirate of elite quicks with Cummins ...

The world Test champions lead the two-match series 1-0, and even a draw in Guwahati would secure their first series win in India since 2000. India, having lost the opener in Kolkata, their fourth defeat in six home Tests, will need to bat long to avoid another loss. The Proteas reached 107-3 at the first break, after losing three wickets in the morning session, with Tristan Stubbs on 14 and Tony de Zorzi on 21 at the crease. Play in Guwahati began 30 minutes early due to early sunsets, with intervals reversed—shorter tea before lunch. South Africa resumed at 26-0, after bowling India out for 201 on day three, taking a 288-run lead in the first innings. They opted not to enforce the follow-on. Left-handed opener Ryan Rickelton hit three fours in the first session before he fell to Jadeja's left-ar...

French Researchers Explore mRNA as a Weapon Against Cancer

Image
In a laboratory in Orleans, France, scientists are exploring the potential of messenger RNA (mRNA) — famously used in Covid-19 vaccines — as a possible treatment for aggressive forms of cancer. Messenger RNA, or mRNA, is a molecule that carries genetic instructions from DNA to cells, directing them to produce specific proteins. “For cancer, this message is designed to stimulate the patient’s own immune system to fight tumors effectively,” said Dimitri Szymczak, project manager at INSERM’s ART lab in Orleans. Although mRNA was discovered in the early 1960s, it gained global recognition during the Covid-19 pandemic, when it enabled the rapid development of next-generation vaccines — a breakthrough that contributed to the 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Currently, most research focuses on using mRNA to develop cancer vaccines, but its applications extend far beyond that. “mRNA can enhance immunity, compensate for malfunctioning cells, target rare or genetic disorders, and even treat a...

Researchers Warn of Health Risks from Ultra-Processed Foods

Image
Researchers on Wednesday cautioned that the growing worldwide intake of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) presents a serious health risk, urging governments to consider marketing restrictions and taxes on certain products produced by large food corporations. The international team of scientists also defended their research against critics, comparing efforts to cast doubt on UPFs’ risks to the tactics once used by the tobacco industry to downplay health dangers. While the definition of UPFs has sparked debate in scientific circles, with some experts calling for more precise criteria and further studies, leading researchers argue the evidence is already strong enough to demand action. In a trio of studies published in The Lancet, the researchers reviewed 104 prior investigations and found that diets high in UPFs are linked to a significantly higher risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and premature death. Their second study highlighted that UPF consumption is on the rise globally, ...

Opener Devon Conway contributed 49 runs, but aside from Mitchell, the rest of the batting line-up struggled for timing. The 34-year-old world No. 3 in ODI cricket was cautious initially but accelerated in the latter stages, smashing 12 fours and two sixes to the leg-side boundary. Despite favoring his injury while running between the wickets, Mitchell reached his century with a commanding pull off seamer Jayden Seales in the 46th over. Australia names Weatherald in Ashes Test squad, calls selection “impressive”

Image
Chief selector George Bailey praised uncapped opener Jake Weatherald as “impressive” after the 31-year-old was named in Australia’s squad for the first Ashes Test. Bailey highlighted Weatherald’s attributes, saying he possesses all the qualities needed for the role. Marnus Labuschagne was recalled to the squad, while young opener Sam Konstas was dropped from the 15-man roster. Steve Smith will captain the side in Pat Cummins’s absence due to injury. If selected to face Ben Stokes’s England in Perth on November 21, Weatherald would become Usman Khawaja’s sixth opening partner since David Warner’s early retirement last year. Previous experiments with Steve Smith, Nathan McSweeney, Travis Head, Labuschagne, and Konstas had not yielded long-term success. Bailey did not confirm whether Weatherald would make his debut in the XI. “No, not confirmed in the XI,” he said. “We still have 14 of our 15-man squad playing round four of the Sheffield Shield, so there’s more information to gathe...

Why am I breathless after just a walk? The real reasons

Image
Many people experience shortness of breath or feel out of breath even after walking a short distance. In medical terms, this condition is known as dyspnea, and while it can be temporary or harmless, it sometimes signals a more serious underlying issue. Below are some common causes of breathlessness during walking or mild activity: 1. Lack of Physical Fitness If you get tired or start panting after light physical activity, it may be due to poor physical fitness. When the body is not used to regular movement, even simple tasks like climbing stairs or walking longer distances can lead to shortness of breath. 2. Obesity Excess body fat, especially around the chest and abdomen, can put pressure on the lungs and diaphragm, making it harder to breathe. Obesity is one of the most common causes of breathlessness during physical activity. 3. Anxiety Disorder People suffering from anxiety often experience physical symptoms such as rapid heartbeat and difficulty breathing. Excessive worry...

Pakistan will feature a strong lineup, with Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah spearheading the attack, and Baba...
