Tobacco costs Pakistan 164,000 lives, $2.5B yearly: WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning about the devastating toll of tobacco use in Pakistan, which claims approximately 164,000 lives annually and drains the economy of over PKR 700 billion (roughly US$ 2.5 billion). Calling the crisis both a public health emergency and an economic threat, WHO is urging to implement stronger tobacco control measures—particularly through significantly higher taxes—to curb consumption, save lives, and ease the national burden. The organization said all tobacco products on the market, without exception and regardless of its manufacturer, are extremely harmful to health and pose a major risk to vulnerable populations such as children and teenagers. Arshad Nadeem secures a spot in the Javelin final at the Asian Athletics Championship

Pakistan’s Olympic gold medallist javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem and rising star Yasir Sultan have qualified for the javelin throw final at the Asian Athletics Championship. Arshad recorded a throw of 86.34 metres in his first attempt in Group A to secure a place in the final. “I was at the top in the qualifying round with a long throw,” said Arshad. “The final is tomorrow at 1:10pm Pakistan time.” Pakistan’s second javelin thrower, Sultan, qualified for the final with a throw of 76.7m in Group B. Ronaldo declares end of Al-Nassr journey

Cristiano Ronaldo indicated that he could leave Al Nassr after declaring that a “chapter is over” hours after the Saudi Pro League finished. The 40-year-old Portuguese forward joined Al Nassr in 2022 from Manchester United and his contract with the Saudi club ends this summer. A special transfer window runs from June 1-10 to allow the 32 clubs involved in the Club World Cup to sign players. Al-Nassr aren’t at the Club World Cup unlike fellow Saudi side Al Hilal. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a revamped management and coaching staff for the upcoming T20 international series against Bangladesh, notably omitting assistant coach Azhar Mahmood from the coaching staff. As per the cricket board, New Zealand’s Mike Hesson will assume the responsibilities of head coach. Among the other key appointments, Australia's Ashley Noffke has been named as the bowling coach, while Hanif Malik will serve as the batting coach. Whereas, Naveed Akram Cheema has been appointed as the team manager.
