Pakistan Government Allows National Team to Play Against India in T20 World Cup
The Government of Pakistan has granted approval for the national cricket team to play against India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, allowing the scheduled match on February 15 to go ahead as planned.

According to an official statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was formally briefed by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi on the outcome of high-level consultations involving the Pakistan Cricket Board, representatives of the International Cricket Council (ICC), and the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

The government reviewed formal requests submitted by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, as well as discussions held with Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and other ICC member nations. Officials said the correspondence focused on identifying a practical solution to the challenges surrounding the tournament.

Following multilateral consultations, the government directed Pakistan’s national team to take the field against India on February 15, 2026, in accordance with the tournament schedule.

The statement said the decision was taken in the spirit of cricket, to ensure continuity of the global sporting event, and in the broader interest of all participating nations. Pakistan revised its earlier position after requests from the ICC and friendly countries.

The prime minister and the Pakistani public extended their best wishes to the national team, expressing confidence that the players would compete with sportsmanship and national pride on the global stage.

Earlier, Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake held a telephone conversation with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and requested that Pakistan participate in the India match scheduled to be played in Sri Lanka. He recalled Pakistan’s support for Sri Lankan cricket during challenging periods in the past.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board also formally urged Pakistan to reconsider its boycott decision, while the UAE Cricket Board reportedly made a similar request, recommending a decision in the best interest of international cricket.

Speaking to the media in Lahore after a Pakistan Super League event, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said that the decision to play or boycott the match rested solely with the government. He added that following consultations with the prime minister and engagement with various cricket boards, approval was granted for the February 15 fixture.
